Exchange Programmes
Since 1981, IJP has offered young talented journalists the opportunity to report from abroad as temporary correspondents. Every year, up to 120 young journalists receive scholarships for working stays in Germany and – in exchange – in more than 50 countries worldwide. Fellows spend eight weeks getting to know the daily routine of the editorial office in their host country. At the same time, they work as correspondents for their home media and research their own topics on location.
IJP programmes foster international exchange between media and opinion makers and deepen the knowledge of journalists beyond their own national borders, immersing them in the politics, economy and culture of the host region.
The IJP fellowship programmes are a valuable additional professional qualification. They provide journalists with new professional and personal experiences and contacts. At the same time, they contribute to a more balanced portrayal of Germany abroad and to better foreign reporting in Germany. Many former IJP fellows now work as foreign correspondents in their former host countries.
Editors, reporters and freelance journalists from all media genres are eligible to apply. Each fellowship usually starts with an introduction conference. This is followed by six- to eight-weeks with their host media, where fellows are involved in the daily work routine but also work on their own journalistic projects and report for their home media.
Interested journalists should send their applications directly to the contact person of the individual programmes.
Currently, fellowship programmes are offered for the following regions:
