Central Eastern Europe / Germany

The German-Central Eastern European Programme was launched in 2018 and ran through 2024 as part of a climate-focused initiative. It provided journalists with the opportunity to gain in-depth insights into the media landscapes of Germany, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia, and Slovakia.

Each year, up to ten journalists from these countries were given the chance to spend up to eight weeks in a host newsroom, expanding their professional experience and cross-border networks. Journalists from Germany were placed with media outlets in Central Eastern Europe, while journalists from the region worked with host outlets in Germany. Fellows were integrated into the daily work of their host media, while also pursuing their own journalistic projects and contributing to outlets in their home countries.

In addition, participants were encouraged to explore their host country more deeply, strengthen professional ties, and collaborate on a joint transnational research topic during the programme.

Note: The programme’s funding period concluded in early 2025. Updates regarding potential future editions will be announced in due course.

‘’Our society is facing a plethora of challenges. Working with CLEW’s young professionals with different backgrounds that are full of passion and dedication for the top-notch journalism was an amazing experience. I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn more about climate change issues, what led to these problems, how they affect our lives and societies, and about possible solutions. I would definitely recommend the IJP programme to all young and ambitious professionals. All together we go further towards a more sustainable world!’’
