Prizes and Awards

For many years, IJP has been honouring journalists and their work annually through two awards, which come with a 2,000 Euro prize each.

The Arthur F. Burns Awards are granted by the German Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs to one German and one North American Burns alumni who have published a remarkable and exceptional contribution on the political, economic or cultural situation of the respective partner country or on transatlantic relations.

The George F. Kennan Commentary Award is awarded by the IJP Board of Trustees to a journalist who has published a commentary on issues concerning the United States or transatlantic relations in a remarkable and outstanding manner within a German outlet.

The jury of both awards is composed of the editors-in-chief, curators and former award winners Barbara Junge (tageszeitung, taz), Stefan Kornelius (Süddeutsche Zeitung), Michael Bröcker (Table.Media), Prof. Manuel Hartung (ZEIT Foundation), Elisabeth Niejahr (Hertie Foundation) as well as Frank-Dieter Freiling (ZDF).

The application deadline for the Arthur F. Burns and the George F. Kennan Award is January 31 of each year. Submissions should be made by email to freiling@ijp.org.
